How can you attach a catch phrase to giving birth? Like this: Push Present. It’s all over Entertainment Tonight. Diamonds and Bentleys splashed across the pages of US Weekly. The Huffington Post recently asked our Clinical Director Jessica LeRoy to weigh in on the growing trend of push presents from a distinctly feminist perspective. What is a “Push Present” you may ask? It’s a gift given to a new mother by her husband or partner. A big gift, like diamond earrings or a sapphire necklace. You know because there’s no song that says babies are a girl’s best friend or an ad campaign proclaiming that babies are forever.
What happens with feminism and Push Presents meet? Jessica talks about status and expectations in a world where more than half of American women now say they want a Push Present. Are Push Presents a healthy expression of appreciation and family? Are they a superficial substitution for love and connection with one’s wife and baby? Every family and every answer are different.
Tell us what you think! Have you received a Push Present? Do you want one? Do you know anyone who was given an extravagant gift after her child was born? And what do you think we should call these gifts anyway – because they definitely need a new name!
