Everyone remembers that episode of “Sex & the City,” where the women attended a BYOB party (Bring Your Old Boyfriend.) It may have seemed trite on SATC, but BYOB parties are a great way to meet other singles who’ve already been vetted by your friends! Technically, it doesn’t even have to be an ex! It can be anyone whom you think is great, but don’t want to date yourself: a friend, a classmate, your cousin. The idea is to get all these awesome people in a room together and hope for some new connections to be made. It’s way easier than matchmaking, and you won’t get blamed if it doesn’t work out because your friends pick for themselves!

The guests are often just outside each other’s social circle, friends of friends who may not have met yet, but probably share common interests and values. The pressure is off, it’s not a blind date. Party-goers can scope it out & see if there’s anyone they click with. The bonus is that all the people in the room have been vouched for as “cool” by someone you know, plus, if they’re at the event, they want to meet someone new too. Meanwhile, all your closest friends are in the room, offering support or giving you an out if a conversation turns awkward. You also overcome one of the hurdles of every new relationship, meeting the friends. You get to see if a person meshes with your gang right away.

To spread the love even further, you can set up the BYOB party like a charity event. Everyone pays a small cover, or you can take donations for a cause you care about. This also ensures that the people at the party are up for giving back to a cause that matters, sort of a built-in generosity check! It’s a fun way to raise money & awareness, and, let’s be honest, a little romance never hurt anybody.
