Buddhism has become more visible in Los Angeles culture with yoga, vegetarian and vegan lifestyle, and meditation entering the realm of popular culture. It is interesting that these ancient practices have been adopted and morphed into trendy hobbies. Hopefully this isn’t going anywhere. Buddhist practice and principles have an undeniably positive affect on our society, and are mainly based on psychological principles.

As with many eastern societies, Bali allows for more shades of gray than American culture does when it comes to good and evil. As the symbol yin yang represents, every darkness must possess some light, every light, some darkness. This is a concept that is good to apply to ourselves and others in our own daily lives.

Yesterday I went to yoga for the first time in months. I feel good today, pleasantly sore, but that class was. not. easy. The balancing poses have always been some of my strongest, but yesterday confirmed that my yoga hiatus had taken its toll. My legs wobbled in the longer holds. I found it hard to keep my face calm and my breath steady. It reminded me, once again, of how the mental and physical aspects of yoga are indelibly interwoven. The shaking legs beneath me, telling not only of the muscle’s long break from seeking equilibrium, but also of how little I had made the space to practice mental balance.

When I was little, a witch lived in my closet and the Headless Horseman roamed my hallway. I was afraid of the dark and of all that lurked there. Many nights, I ended up on the floor of my parents’ room, comforted knowing that the horseman would have to go through both my parents before he could get to me.
